Kris Kristofferson’s resume reads like the great American novel—or maybe a post-modern Western that reworks the usual beats into a narrative of darkness and light. He’s been a Golden Gloves boxer, Army helicopter pilot, Rhodes Scholar, and successful singer/songwriter whose songs have been recorded by Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Emmy Lou Harris, Janis Joplin, Bob Dylan, and hundreds more.
In a 2005 story in the music journal, No Depression, Bill Friskics-Warren wrote that Kristofferson’s songs opened up new possibilities for what country music could say and mean. “Kristofferson writes the restlessly self-surpassing song of himself….taking every “wrong” direction and in the process finding himself on his lean, often lonely, ultimately transformative way back home.” In this spirit, Kris works his own imperfections into a story of himself. And it’s how he approaches his film characters, including in my 2005 picture, Disappearances, for which Kris performed this benefit concert. He shines in the picture as schemer and dreamer Quebec Bill Bonhomme, chasing down a cache of bootleg whiskey from the treacherous Canadian whiskey pirate, Carcajou.
Many of us see our own flawed selves in Kris’ songs, which weave a quintessentially American narrative. Think about his indelible line from “Me and Bobby McGee.” By writing, “Freedom’s just another word for nothing left to lose,” Kristofferson mines his own low ebb for resonance, capturing powerful meaning that remains a touchstone for an entire generation.
